President Joe Biden, in a speech delivered in Tempe, Arizona, criticized his predecessor, Donald Trump, accusing him of having no regard for the Constitution. Biden stated that Trump was driven not by “common service and decency toward our fellow Americans but by vengeance and vindictiveness”.
Biden also referred to the events of January 6, 2021, when Trump was indicted for inciting his supporters to attack the Capitol Building in Washington. This incident occurred after Trump lost the 2020 US presidential election to Biden.
On the same day as Biden’s speech, House Republicans initiated an impeachment inquiry against him. However, a recent national NBC News poll revealed that 56% of registered voters believe Congress should not hold hearings to start the process of removing Biden from office. In contrast, 39% of voters think it should.
The poll further showed that while 88% of Democrats opposed the hearings, 73% of Republicans supported them.
Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor and expert in impeachment issues, cautioned against presuming impeachable conduct based on these allegations. He stated that while dishonesty might not sit well with many people, it does not constitute an impeachable offense.
