Peter Obi Urges Swift Action on Insecurity While Talks of State Police Stalls

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has voiced concerns over the escalating insecurity plaguing Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi highlighted the urgent need for immediate measures to curb the rampant violence and restore peace across the nation.

“While the idea of State Policing…is a welcome development, all efforts, at the moment, should be geared towards ending the ugly trend of insecurity in the nation,” emphasized Obi, echoing the sentiments of many Nigerians grappling with the daily horrors of terror attacks and kidnappings.

Obi stressed the importance of proactive measures in addressing the dire security situation, cautioning against complacency while awaiting the implementation of state police forces. He condemned the recent wave of violence, citing incidents in Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and other regions where innocent lives have been lost to senseless acts of terrorism.

“The high level of insecurity…forms a perfect recipe for disaster in our nation,” warned Obi, underscoring the grave implications of unchecked violence amidst widespread hunger and poverty.

In light of these challenges, Obi called upon the government and security agencies to expedite action in ending the reign of terror perpetrated by insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements. He urged swift and decisive measures to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians, regardless of their location or circumstances.

“I commiserate with the families who have lost dear ones…while praying for the safe rescue of those in captivity,” expressed Obi, extending his heartfelt condolences to victims of violent attacks while advocating for concerted efforts to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens.

Amidst Obi’s impassioned plea for urgent action, discussions surrounding the implementation of state police forces have gained momentum. Following an emergency meeting convened by Chief Bola Tinubu with state governors at the Aso Rock Villa, talks of embracing state police have surfaced as a potential solution to the nation’s security challenges.

While the prospect of state police offers a glimmer of hope for addressing localized security concerns, it has also raised debate and skepticism. Former lawmaker and social critic, Senator Shehu Sani, cautioned against the potential pitfalls of state police, warning of the risks of anarchy and political manipulation.
