Peter Obi Calls for Accountability Over Alleged N1.1 Trillion Disbursement to Governors

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over the recent announcement made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the disbursement of a staggering N1.1 trillion financial support to state governors.

Speaking out about the need for transparency and accountability, Obi emphasized the importance of ensuring that the funds are utilized effectively to alleviate the present hardship faced by the citizens and to foster future growth in the country.

In a statement posted on his official X handle, Obi commended the Federal Government for offering such substantial support but stressed the necessity for detailed explanations regarding the disbursement process. He highlighted the significance of transparency in governance, asserting that the public should have access to information regarding how the funds are allocated and utilized.

“It is pertinent, for the interest of good governance and transparency, that the details of the disbursement of such support be explained further, so that the public, the masses for whom the support is meant, can follow through and ensure that it is utilized appropriately to the benefit of the people,” stated Obi.

Expressing his concerns over the handling of financial resources, Obi urged for a shift from the practice of indiscriminately allocating funds to immediate problems and consumption. Instead, he advocated for strategic investments in productive ventures to address present challenges and stimulate future development.

“We must stop this unproductive habit of throwing scarce and borrowed money at immediate problems, and consumption, but rather through an articulated plan, invest aggressively in production, in a clear, visible, and transparent manner, in which people can see the future benefits,” Obi emphasized.

Furthermore, Obi stressed the importance of prioritizing human development as a means to achieve sustainable growth and development in the country. He emphasized the need for a shift from consumption-oriented policies to production-focused strategies, asserting that investing in human capital is crucial for addressing the nation’s challenges effectively.

“Now more than ever, our nation needs a clear and urgent move from consumption to production by prioritizing and investing in human development which will go towards providing a sure and lasting solution to many of our challenges of today,” Obi remarked.
