The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress has joined the nationwide protest against economic challenges arising from the removal of fuel subsidy.
On Tuesday, demonstrators took to the streets and proceeded to the office of the State’s Head of Service, Barrister Ahmed Liman.
Speaking to the protesters gathered at Liman’s office, Sani Haliru, the chairman of the NLC’s state chapter, emphasized that the protest aimed to represent not only the interests of the workers but also those of the entire nation.
“The alarming rate of hunger and starvation, suffering has become so worrisome and unbearable that the labour forces have no option but to go on protest,” Haliru said.
On his own side, Liman commended the labour force for conducting peaceful protests across the state. He offered assurances that he would personally communicate their grievances to the state governor, Dauda Lawal, to ensure that necessary measures are taken in response to their concerns.
Protest in Osun
Also, on Tuesday, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress staged a peaceful protest in Osogbo, Osun State, against the current economic hardship ravaging the country.
The protesters, led by the Osun NLC chairman, Christopher Arapasopo, began their march from Freedom Park, Osogbo, and moved through MDS Road, chanting anti-Bola Tinubu songs.
For more than two-hour gatherings of protesters beneath Olaiya Bridge, business operations in the surrounding area came to a standstill. Similarly, in Osogbo, commercial activities were halted for several hours.
Osun NLC chairman, Arapasopo, called on the Federal Government to immediately find solutions to the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
He said, “What Tinubu promised during his electioneering campaign was a reprieve for Nigerians, but what we are seeing now is the opposite of that.
“He must immediately come up with solutions. People are hungry, and they are angry. We don’t want the situation to go out of hand. There is a need for measures that will immediately address the situation.”
NLC Protests In Anambra
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Anambra State are currently at the state capital in Awka, protesting the economic hardship in the country.
The protesters were seen gathered at the Aroma Roundabout in Awka on Tuesday and marched towards the Government House gate in the state capital.
The chairman of the NLC in the state, Humphrey Nwafor, expressed that the economic distress in the nation has reached an intolerable level for both workers and citizens.
He urged the Federal Government to reconsider workers’ salaries, advocating for a minimum of N1.2 million, emphasizing this as a crucial measure to alleviate the current challenges faced by workers nationwide.
Additionally, he called upon the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to reinstate the payment of the N12,000 wage award, which has been suspended by the state for several months.

Also joining the protest were members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, led by its chairman, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji.
The ASUU chairman, Ubaoji, on his part, urged Soludo to look into the poor condition of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, adding that, “At the moment, nothing is happening at the COOU, infrastructure is decrepit, the governor should look into this.”
