The Alamutu (Ologede) market in Idi-oro, Mushin, has been closed by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) due to unsanitary conditions and improper garbage disposal methods in the area.
The initiative, according to LAWMA’s managing director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, is a component of LAWMA’s continuous efforts to tackle the ubiquitous filth in marketplaces throughout the state.
For the well-being of vendors and customers, he continued, all marketplaces must adhere to strict sanitary requirements.
“It is paramount that we maintain a hygienic environment in our markets.
“This action is not just a response to Alamutu Market’s conditions, but a part of LAWMA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that markets in Lagos meet the required standards of cleanliness and sanitation,” Mr Gbadegesin said.
He mentioned that the enforcement measure came after several other markets, including Oyingbo, Ladipo, and Alayabiagba, had recently been shut down for similar infractions.
The closures, according to him, demonstrate LAWMA’s unshakable commitment to uniformly enforcing sanitary laws at all markets, regardless of their location or size.
To address environmental violations by illicit traders in the axis, LAWMA has started wiping up unlawful trading activities along Yaba Railway corridors.
Mr. Gbadegesin added that it was now essential to take enforcement steps against illicit trading practices in order to provide a cleaner and healthier living environment for all Lagos citizens.
“The Authority is fully committed to stamping out activities capable of defacing the environment and endangering the lives of the people.
“For waste management-related issues in your area, call LAWMA toll-free numbers: 07080601020 and 617,” he said.
