The vice-chancellor of the University of Abuja, Abdul Rasheed during the 27th convocation breathing in Abuja on Wednesday stated that the institution will commence drug tests and make sure that students who aim to study in the university will compulsorily take a part in series of drug tests and will as a result present the test result to the school before completing the admission process.
The vice-chancellor also informed the media that the school is working on terms with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to help students who suffer from drugs to rehabilitate and to caution against the effects and use of drugs. He also explains that if Any student is caught involved or suffering from drugs, such students won’t be sent off school but will be handed to the NDLEA primarily as mainly to help them rehabilitate properly under the right guidelines.
With the school convocation coming up on Saturday 7th of October, the vice-chancellor also used the medium to announce that about 7,128 undergraduate students will be graduating and for those, they will be graduating also includes 100 Ph.D. 346 professional Masters and 326 academic Masters.
Vice-chancellor Rasheed also informed the media that the introduction of a foreign language will be made and specifically the Russian language will be part of the compulsory general courses for their students to partake in and pass before graduating from the institution. He explained this to be a new step forward to progress in giving and providing knowledge to the students of the institution which will help students to master other languages excluding Nigerian languages.
The speech reads, “The drug status of students is important to help students to be free from drugs. The students will not be sent away from school if it is observed that they are involved in drug abuse but rather they will be rehabilitated in collaboration with the NDLEA”
“We are also making efforts to bring in some of the foreign languages as degree programs but the versity has made it a compulsory course in general studies that every student must study and pass one of these foreign languages before graduation. We would offer the Russian language in addition to the foreign language we offer and the students will offer at least one of these foreign languages.
