“We Are In An Economic Mess”, Zamfara Residents Lament Amid Soaring Food Prices

ZAMFARA

Residents of Zamfara State, particularly Muslims, are grappling with the harsh reality of skyrocketing living costs, with essential foodstuffs becoming increasingly unaffordable by the day.

A visit to several main markets in Gusau revealed the distress of both sellers and buyers, who bemoaned the steep rise in prices, making it challenging for many households to afford basic necessities during the Ramadan period.

Watermelon seller, Ishiaku Ibrahim, highlighted the scarcity-driven surge in prices, citing restricted access to farmlands due to bandit activities. He lamented, “There is no watermelon of N100 now as bandits did not allow farmers to access their farmlands.”

Ibrahim emphasized the exorbitant pricing of produce by farmers, attributing it to heightened risks and transportation costs, which have doubled.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, the cost of other food items has soared beyond the means of many, exacerbating the plight of the populace.

Trader Ibrahim Yahaya, dealing in tomatoes, onions, and fresh pepper, echoed concerns over dwindling patronage amid the prevailing economic hardship.

Buyer Mrs. Agnes Ibukunle underscored the widespread impact, stating, “The situation is not only affecting the Muslims but the entire population of the state,” as many households struggle to afford two meals a day.

With Easter and Muslim celebrations looming, Ibukunle expressed apprehension about the future, emphasizing the urgent need for the Federal Government to address security and economic challenges. She lamented, “We are in a serious economic mess.”

Similar sentiments resonated at the meat section of Gusau Central Market, where sellers decried dwindling patronage. Muhammad Imran remarked, “Most of our customers were lamenting that they needed food first before talking about meat,” reflecting the prevailing economic strain nationwide.

The pervasive economic distress underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to alleviate the plight of Zamfara residents and tackle the root causes of escalating prices and insecurity.

In light of these challenges, stakeholders call on the government to prioritize economic reforms and security initiatives to uplift vulnerable communities and foster sustainable development.#ZAMFARA
