To address the environmental degradation in Edo, the House of Representatives has urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the sector . This came after Honourable Anamero Dekeri, Member representing Etsako Federal Constituency moved the motion to draw federal government attention to the erosion menace in his constituency. The motion was immediately adopted at Thursday’s plenary.
Mr. Dekeri, who raised the motion, cited the worrisome rate of environmental degradation in Etsako Federal Constituency.
He claimed that the destruction occasioned by gully erosion and torrential rainfall had rendered certain locations inaccessible as well as devastated lives and properties, including farmlands.
Honorable Dekeri claimed that following a heavy rainfall in Okpella, the bridge between Iddo-Okugbe and the village of Awuyemi washed away.
“Electric poles and communication gadgets connecting parts of the state to other parts of the country are not left out. There is a need to stop this ugly trend of environmental degradation in Etsako Federal Constituency in Edo”. Mr. Dekeri explained.
In order to restore the affected towns to the national grid, the house encouraged the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to replace the damaged electric poles, cables, and other components.
The House also requested the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to step in and rebuild the damaged bridge so that commuters and cars would have immediate access to other parts of the state.
Additionally, they requested the Ministry of Works to require the contractor for the road project to immediately restart construction.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation were further encouraged by the House to deliver aid supplies to the impacted areas.
The House Committees on the Ecological Fund, FERMA, NEMA, and REA were ordered by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu to ensure compliance and accurate feedback.
