2027 Presidency: Peter Obi is an Asset — NLC Says Amid LP Leadership Struggle

In anticipation of the upcoming 2027 presidential election, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has signaled a green light for Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Part, to depart from the party if he so chooses.

The announcement was made by Benson Upah, the spokesperson of NLC, during an interview with journalists.

Upah reiterated the union’s steadfast stance against Julius Abure’s leadership as the national chairman of the Labour Party, emphasizing that despite Abure’s re-election through what the NLC deems an “illegal national convention,” they refuse to acknowledge his legitimacy.

Furthermore, a group of retired workers under the banner of the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists has called for the resignation of both Julius Abure and NLC President, Joe Ajaero, citing a contentious leadership struggle within the party.

Peter Obi’s strained relationship with the Labour Party leadership stems from his dissatisfaction with the handling of the convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Obi voiced his grievances during an X Space session hosted by Parallel Facts, expressing frustration over the lack of wider consultation before the convention.

Despite speculations about Obi’s potential departure from the party and rumors of seeking a new political platform, Upah emphasized that the decision lies solely with Obi. He affirmed Obi’s right to determine his political destiny, acknowledging him as an asset to any party.

Should Obi opt to leave the Labour Party, Upah asserted that the NLC would not impede his decision, respecting his freedom of choice.

“The right of choice is available to Mr Obi. If he chooses to leave the party, that is his preference. We can’t sit in judgment over him on that. But if he chooses to remain, of course, Peter Obi is an asset any day. I rest my case on that,” Upah stated.
