Insecurity: Gunmen Abduct Rivers State Governorship Candidate, Kill Two Others

Gunmen clad in military attire abducted Sobomabo Jackrich, the Rivers State governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement in the 2023 general election, from his residence in Usokun, Degema Local Government Area, on Monday morning.

Reports indicate that during the raid at his residence around 3 am, two of Jackrich’s supporters were fatally shot by the assailants, whose identities remain unknown.

The gunmen then abducted Jackrich, a former militant leader known as ‘Egberipapa’ who had previously embraced amnesty during the late President Umar Yar’Adua’s tenure.

Soibibo Sokari, Jackrich’s media aide, confirmed the incident and the abduction of his principal when contacted by the press.

Sokari stated, “Yes it is true he was abducted this morning. Two persons were killed, and their bodies were carted away along with him. We are still following up on the incident to get more details.

“We don’t know exactly who is behind it. But as the details unfold, we will let the public know about it.”

Meanwhile, PUNCH reported that a source who spoke on condition of anonymity said that it was the military that whisked away the  ex-militant leader, saying, “His residence was condoned.”

Despite attempts to contact the acting Deputy Director, Division, Army Public Relations, Lt Col. Jonah Danjuma, he could not be reached as of the time this report was filed.

Punch also noted that Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, said that the situation involving Jackrich was not a kidnapping incident, but that he is currently under the custody of security personnel.
