A hill collapse in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State has led to the tragic loss of eight lives, suspected to be Almajiri students. The incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, has left the community reeling in shock and grief.
Dan Umma, the headteacher of Tsagniya school, recounted the harrowing moment when the collapse occurred: “I am yet to know the cause as I was alerted by the cries of people at the back of the house only to see that a large portion of the hill has fallen on the Almajiris killing eight of them instantly while one was rescued from the rubbles and has been admitted in the hospital.”
The proximity of the hill to residential buildings exacerbated the situation, as population expansion and accommodation challenges pushed settlements closer to the hill’s edge. The hill, which also served as a makeshift toilet for the Almajiri students, was regularly dug into for clay to mold clay blocks for construction purposes.
