The United States 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices said that during March 18 state election in Lagos, the All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly intimidated and suppressed voters in Igbo-dominated areas and that the Labour Party presidential candidate and ethnically Igbo Peter Obi won the February 25 national election.
These reports were published on the official website of the United States Government.
According to the report, viral videos on social media showed APC supporters in Ojo threatening to attack ethnic Igbo voters presumed to be pro-Obi, and APC supporters also attacked journalists.

It also stressed that police officers were present but failed to respond to attacks. There was no evidence that alleged perpetrators were arrested or prosecuted.
Among other significant human rights issues, the report included that there were arbitrary and unlawful killings, including extrajudicial killings; torture, or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the Nigerian government. Also, there were harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary arrest or detention.
The report also stated that there were serious problems with the independence of the judiciary; and arbitrary or unlawful interference with privacy.
