Man Drowns in Lagos Lagoon While Fleeing Arrest for Alleged Cement Theft

A tragic incident unfolded in Lagos as a man identified as Azeez reportedly drowned in the Lagos lagoon while attempting to escape arrest for an alleged theft.

The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to NAN on Sunday.

According to SP Hundeyin, the director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for Lagos Central reported the incident to the Ikoyi Police Division on Friday around 12:20 pm. The report stated that the incident occurred at the Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found a crowd gathered around the lifeless body of the deceased by the waterside. Paramedics from Pre Hospital Care, Lagos, later confirmed Azeez’s death.

He stated, “The deceased was later identified as Azeez. He was later confirmed dead by paramedics of Pre Hospital Care, Lagos.

“It was discovered that one Elijah Amos, a seller of the cement, was pursuing the deceased before he jumped into the lagoon, because he was alleged to have stolen some bags of cement,” Hundeyin added.

The police visited the scene, and the deceased’s body was evacuated to the Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy and preservation.
