Multichoice Turns Deaf Ear to Court Order, Implements Subscription Price Increase Despite Ruling

Despite a court ruling prohibiting the company from implementing a price hike, Multichoice Nigeria has proceeded with its plan to raise subscription rates for DStv and GOtv services.

Initially announced on April 24, Multichoice notified subscribers of an impending fee increase set to take effect from May 1. However, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja issued an interim order halting the price hike following an ex-parte motion.

Despite the court’s directive, recent checks reveal that Multichoice has gone ahead with the tariff adjustments as initially proposed. The updated prices are now being displayed and enforced on its official website.

For DStv Premium subscribers, the price has surged from N29,500 to N37,000, marking a significant increase. Compact Plus subscribers now face a fee of N25,000 instead of the previous N19,800, representing a substantial jump. Similarly, rates for Compact, Confam, and Yanga subscribers have all been adjusted upwards, placing strain on their budgets.

GOtv subscribers are also impacted by the price hike, with changes reflected on their official websites. Elite subscribers (Supa+ and Supa) are now required to pay N15,700 and N9,600, respectively, while Max and Jolli subscribers face fees of N7,200 and N4,850, respectively.

Multichoice has attributed the price hike to factors such as the foreign exchange crunch, operational costs and high electricity tariff.
