The Kano State Government officiated a mass wedding ceremony for 1800 couples as a spectacular show of community support. The majority of those who benefit from this initiative are widows and divorcees.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Leader of the Kwankwasiyya, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other notable people attended the mass wedding, which was held at the Emir’s palace. The ceremony was a component of a state-sponsored plan to give couples a special and affordable opportunity to formally bind their unions.
The event was praised by Governor Yusuf, who said it demonstrated the state’s dedication to fostering cultural traditions and social solidarity. He emphasised that the mass wedding programme shows Kano State’s commitment to supporting and celebrating the institution of marriage in addition to strengthening relationships between couples.
Additional wedding ceremonies and a traditional feast called “Walima” were set for the government house to extend the celebrations. In an effort to manage the crowd and facilitate movement, the mass wedding was decentralised, with separate ceremonies taking place in the many local governments that comprised the state.
While many people view Kano State’s mass wedding project as a move in the right direction towards assisting disadvantaged populations, including widows and divorcees, other detractors contend that it might be a waste of public resources. They argue that long-term development initiatives would benefit more from receiving the funds used for these events.
Nevertheless, the Kano State Government sees this programme as a long-term investment in the community’s ability to maintain social harmony and cultural diversity.
