Ugwuka, a student in the Department of English, reportedly took her own life after repeatedly failing a particular course.

According to The Punch, Ugwuka had successfully passed all her courses except one, which a lecturer had allegedly vowed she would never pass. This persistent failure and the lecturer’s alleged vow have been pointed to as factors contributing to her despair.

A video circulating online shows Ugwuka’s grieving mother accusing the lecturer of driving her daughter to suicide. In the video, the mother claims, “Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide.”

The heart-wrenching situation has sparked outrage and calls for further investigation into the circumstances leading to Ugwuka’s death.

A graduate of Ebonyi State University, Rex Nwome, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Favour Ugwuka’s tragic death. According to Nwome, Ugwuka took her own life due to the repeated failure of a particular course.

“Favour was my classmate and a best friend in the English Department. The lecturer in question vowed never to allow Favour to graduate,” Nwome recounted.

He elaborated that despite passing all other courses, Ugwuka was forced to pay an additional year of tuition to retake the course she repeatedly failed.

“Unfortunately, the lecturer failed her again. What intensified her depression was the recent release of the NYSC shortlist, which did not include her name,” he said.

Nwome further explained that Ugwuka’s desperation to graduate and participate in the national service led to severe depression.

“She wandered around EBSU seeking help, very desperate to graduate and serve. These challenges and more culminated in her decision to end her life.”

“I wish she hadn’t gone to such lengths to end her life. R.I.P. Ugwuka Favour, until we meet again,” Nwome added.

The incident was confirmed on Thursday, May 23, 2024, by DSP Joshua Ukandu, the spokesman for the Ebonyi State Police Command. “Yes, the command received a report of a female student’s suicide,” he stated.
