The administration of Bola Tinubu has announced that individuals convicted of certificate forgery, drug offenses, and cult activities will be ineligible for the federal government’s student loan program.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which oversees the student loan scheme, revealed these stipulations in its frequently asked questions section posted on its official X handle on Friday.
According to NELFUND, applications from citizens “convicted of fraud and forgery, drug offenses, cultism, felony, or any offenses involving dishonesty” will be automatically rejected.
According to Peoples Gazette, individuals who have defaulted on previous loans from any licensed financial institution or who have submitted fraudulent documents and were dismissed for exam malpractices by any school authority will also be ineligible.

On Friday, NELFUND opened the application portal for the first phase of the student loan scheme, which is available to students from federal institutions nationwide.
Notably, Tinubu’s own history is marked by controversies, including allegations of academic forgery, identity theft, and involvement in narcotics trafficking.
These issues surfaced before, during, and after the 2023 presidential election, leading to legal challenges from the election petitions tribunal up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Despite the serious allegations, the Supreme Court ruled that Mr. Tinubu was fit to govern the country.
