Kano State Police Command Turns Ex Thugs into Special Constabularies

Kano State Police Command has selected fifty repentant thugs out of the two hundred and twenty-two who chose to embrace a path of non-violence. This initiative, spearheaded by the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, aims to harness the commitment of these former troublemakers in ensuring peace within the state.

Addressing the fifty selected individuals during their passing-out parade on Monday, CP Gumel highlighted the comprehensive training provided to them. The repentant thugs underwent rigorous instruction in both classroom settings and practical field exercises. They were also equipped with the necessary gear to serve as members of the Special Constabulary.

Expressing his satisfaction with this transformative achievement, CP Gumel emphasized that these individuals have transitioned from being agents of chaos to responsible members of society. Their newfound zeal is directed towards safeguarding citizens who were once victims of their violent activities. The Police Command has documented a total of two hundred and twenty-two repentant thugs who have genuinely turned away from criminal behavior, pledging never to engage in thuggery or other social vices that have plagued the state.

CP Gumel asserted, “Today, they have demonstrated their commitment to Kano’s security, vowing not to allow any elements of insecurity to disrupt the hard-earned peace in our state.”

The successful rehabilitation process unfolded over the past three months. The police command engaged identified ring leaders responsible for escalating thuggery and other heinous crimes in Kano. Surprisingly, some notorious gang leaders and their followers responded warmly to the invitation for dialogue.

The command has now shared details of these two hundred and twenty-two repentant individuals with the State Governor. Following a friendly football match between them and the police at the Sani Abacha Stadium Kofar Mata, Kano’s capital city, the government is considering supporting them through life-changing programs.

The fifty selected constabularies were drawn from each of the five local governments that constitute Kano metropolis: Dala, Fagge, Ungogo, Municipal Council, and Gwale LGA. These individuals have successfully completed a rigorous two-month training program as Nigeria Police Special Constabulary.

CP Gumel also addressed supervising police officers within the command. He emphasized professionalism, discipline, and community policing as essential principles for restoring public confidence and trust. Any officer unable to inspire confidence would not qualify for sensitive roles within the force. Furthermore, he directed officers to collaborate closely with members of the Special Constabulary deployed back to their respective communities .
