Fubara Cancels 10,000 Civil Service Jobs Approved by Predecessor Wike

Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has cancelled the employment of 10,000 civil servants, a decision made by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, shortly before the end of his tenure.

During an interactive session with stakeholders in Port Harcourt on Friday, Fubara announced that the recruitment process was flawed and compromised.

Wike had approved the immediate employment of a significant number of youths to fill existing vacancies in the state’s workforce. However, Fubara revealed that upon scrutinizing the names selected from the 23 local government areas, it was found that many were included for political patronage.

The governor noted that 60 percent of the names were over-aged individuals, making them unsuitable for long-term employment.

Fubara stated, “I know that is the first question, the ten thousand jobs. When we came on board we already had details that were submitted to us from the 23 local government areas.

“You will agree with me that when we subjected those names to proper scrutiny, most of those names, in fact, 60 per cent of those names were over-aged. They were names that people brought for political patronage.

“But what we are talking about today is employment for the future. I, personally after the analysis of those things, said ‘How will you employ somebody who is 52 years old as a civil servant?’

“How many years is the person going to work before retirement?”

Fubara expressed his commitment to a more transparent recruitment process in the future, emphasizing the importance of employing individuals for sustainable development.

In other remarks, Fubara reiterated the commitment of his administration to maintaining a strong social contract with the people of Rivers State.

He challenged service providers for the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to enhance their efforts in ensuring prompt waste clearance for a cleaner city.

This directive was delivered by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, who represented the governor during a visit from the RIWAMA Service Providers Association at the Government House Gate in Port Harcourt on Friday.
