Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu has faced significant public backlash for renaming a prominent road in the state after Seyi Tinubu, the son of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The road, previously known as “Pepsi Road,” was set to be commissioned on June 3 by Katsina State Governor Umaru Dikko Radda, but the event was postponed.
A photo of the newly named “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road” went viral on social media on Saturday, sparking criticism from residents and X users. The new commissioning date has yet to be announced.
Local residents have expressed discontent over the decision, questioning the relevance of naming the road after Seyi Tinubu, who they argue has not made any notable contributions to Sokoto or Nigeria.
A resident, Salisu Ahmadu, told Peoples Gazette,“The governor left many illustrious indigenes of Sokoto and instead named a road after the president’s son who is not even from Sokoto or anywhere in the northern region.”
Social media platforms were rife with negative reactions. One X user, Engr Awonbiowo luqman, stated, “Some leaders are seriously need medical attention.”
Another, Henry TP, articulated, “This country this very country sycophant everywhere.” While another X user, Nze Ndi Anambra, stated, “Since wole Soyinka accepted road in Abuja, why can’t first son accept his own in sokoto ?
Another x user, @UncleAnass said, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is denigrating the name of Sokoto with his lack of capacity and sheepishness. Imagine naming a road after Seyi Tinubu. Not even the Tinubu self. Mtschew. This is so denigrating. This is really pathetic. Allah ya isa.”
Another X user, Heinz_Gunner, stated, “Road to North Korea. This is how it begins!!,” while @jnraib2 said “Even Lagos didn’t name a road after Seyi Tinubu, but Sokoto governor must impress Tinubu.”
@AsIngawa001 said “Seyi Tinubu road in Sokoto State stands as a testament to Nigeria’s practice of celebrating individuals with little or no contribution to the country’s progress.”
Seyi Tinubu, despite not holding an official government position, has been visibly active in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has accompanied his father on several international trips.
However, he was previously barred from attending a Federal Executive Council meeting, highlighting his unofficial role.
Efforts to reach Abubakar Bawa, the spokesperson for the Sokoto governor, for comments were unsuccessful.
