The Edo State Government, led by Godwin Obaseki has reaffirmed its decision to ban Okhaighele (youth leaders) in the Edo South Senatorial District, citing that these individuals, along with cultists, pose the greatest threat to the state’s security and stability.
Daily Post recalls that on Friday, June 7, 2024, the Palace of the Oba of Benin rejected the state government’s decision to ban the youth leaders in the seven local government areas comprising the Edo South Senatorial District.
In response, the State Government, through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, and released to the press in Benin City over the weekend, emphasized that it stands firm on its decision to ban the Okhaigheles. Nehikhare stated that the government has reinforced its stance due to the significant increase in cult-related activities and the consequent rise in homicides within the region.
He emphasized that the ban is in the interest of public safety and aims to curb the escalating violence afflicting the communities.
Nehikhare pointed out that data from the Edo State Security Council indicate that Okhaigheles and cultists are the most serious threats to the state’s security and stability.
The commissioner noted that this data prompted the Council to impose a complete ban on these groups.
While acknowledging the importance of respecting the traditions and customs of the communities, Nehikhare asserted that the safety and security of citizens must take precedence.
“Chief Osaro Idah, Obazalu of Benin’s contradictory statement does not change the gravity of the situation at hand, and we stand by our decision to enforce this ban on Okhaigheles to protect the lives of our people.
“The state government notes that statements like the one made by Chief Idah embolden these criminals to take up arms against ordinary citizens, the military, police, and other constitutional security agencies.
“For example, on Friday, June 7, 2024, some so-called youths opened fire on three members of the Nigerian Army attached to Okomu Oil Palm Plc. in Ovia South West Local Government Area, injuring them and throwing the community into pandemonium.
“In the coming weeks, the government will proceed with a full-scale operation to disarm these criminal elements and neutralize their threat against public peace.
“We reiterate that the activities of cultists, Okhaigheles, and their sponsors remain banned in the state, and we will spare no effort to ensure that those who flout the ban are made to face the full weight of the law,” he said.
The government issued a stern warning, stating that it will not permit any individual or organization, regardless of their status, to undermine the State Security Council’s efforts to protect the lives and property of the people.
