Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate for Labour Party, Peter Obi, has voiced his deep concern and sadness over a distressing incident involving Nigerian teenage girls trafficked to Ghana.
Recall that in a series of videos that went viral on Twitter on Friday, young girls between the ages of 15 and 18 were said to have been lured into prostitution in Ghana.
They were reportedly rescued by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organization (NIDO).
Reacting to the incident, Obi in his official X account expressed his profound dismay at the harrowing situation, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to protect the victims.
He extended a willingness to collaborate with any individual or organization involved in combating human trafficking and providing support to those affected.
He wrote, “I was made aware of a disturbing incident yesterday, involving some Nigerian teenage girls who were trafficked to Ghana, as seen in a viral video. I am deeply concerned and saddened by this ugly situation, and I am urgently appealing to the relevant government authorities to take immediate action to rescue and protect these vulnerable girls.
“Furthermore, I am willing to collaborate with any individual or organization involved in the efforts to combat human trafficking and support the victims. It is our collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of these young girls and to prevent such horrific incidents from happening in the future.”
Obi further urged government authorities to swiftly and decisively investigate the incident, prosecute the perpetrators, and offer comprehensive support and rehabilitation to the victims. Additionally, he called upon non-governmental organizations, civil society, and individuals to unite in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation.
“I urge the government to take swift and decisive action to investigate this incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and provide support and rehabilitation to the victims.
“I also call on non-governmental organizations, civil society, and individuals to join forces in this fight against human trafficking and exploitation. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer and more just society for all.”
