An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing, a statement from the president’s office said.
The Malawi Defense Force aircraft vanished from radar after departing the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning.
Despite efforts, aviation officials were unable to establish contact with the aircraft. President Lazarus Chakwera has initiated a search and rescue operation.
The aircraft was en route to Mzuzu International Airport in the country’s north and was expected to arrive just after 10:00 local time.
President Chakwera canceled his planned flight to the Bahamas upon learning of the incident.
