Matija Sarkic, Millwall’s 26-year-old goalkeeper, tragically passed away after becoming ill during his international duty with Montenegro.
Sarkic fell ill at an apartment in Budva, Montenegro, on Saturday morning. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he passed away around 6:30 am local time. Just over a week ago, Sarkic had played a full match for Montenegro against Belgium.
Millwall expressed their devastation on Saturday morning via their website, issuing a statement about the heartbreaking news.
It read, “Sarkic, The Lions’ number one goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.
“A Montenegro international, Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time.
“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”
The footballing community is mourning the loss of Sarkic, a talented and respected player who enjoyed a notable career with several English clubs.
