No To GMO: It Threatens Natural Crop Varieties, Linked to Diseases Like Cancer, Endocrine Disruption — Rhodes-Vivour

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State in the 2023 elections, has expressed serious concerns regarding the widespread contamination of natural crop varieties by genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In a post on his X handle, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the absence of a proper labelling system and surveillance measures, which deprive consumers of the choice between natural and genetically modified products in local markets.

“We have no proper labelling system or surveillance to label and give consumers the choice to buy one pangolo of natural beans or garri at any market,” Rhodes-Vivour stated.

The lack of transparency and regulation not only affects consumer choice but also poses significant risks to Nigeria’s food sovereignty and potential export markets.

“Our food sovereignty and potential export markets are affected,” He said.

Rhodes-Vivour also raised alarms about the health implications linked to GMOs, citing studies that associate genetically modified foods with severe health issues such as cancer and endocrine disruption.

“GMOs are linked to diseases like cancer, endocrine disruption, etc. There is a reason organic food inherently has more value. There is a reason if you are sick, you are advised to eat organic. #NOTOGMOs,” He noted.
