The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step toward creating a new state, as a bill proposing the establishment of Tiga State from Kano was presented for its first reading on July 10, 2024.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman from Kano South, had its first reading on July 10, 2024.
The bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523),” the proposed legislation aims to divide Kano State into two separate states, with Tiga being the new addition.
This development follows recent proposals for the creation of Anioma State in the Southeast region, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko from Delta North.
Additionally, bills have been introduced for the creation of Orlu State by Senator Osita Izunaso and Representative Ikenga Ugochineyere, and Etiti State by Representative Amobi Godwin Ogah and four other lawmakers from the affected communities.
Moreover, there are also ongoing calls for the creation of new states from Lagos and other parts of the country.
