Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated on Wednesday that Ukraine can use long-range missiles supplied by the UK to strike military targets in Russia during their war.
Starmer made this known during his flight to Washington for NATO’s 75th anniversary summit.
He admitted that decisions on the use of British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles were for the Ukrainian armed forces.
The decision over the Storm Shadow missiles, which has been welcomed by Ukraine, represents a hawkish shift in policy from the stance taken by the former Conservative government.
Starmer agreed it was up to Ukraine how it will used the Storm Shadow missiles donated by the UK.
“The missiles will obviously be used in accordance with international humanitarian law as you would expect,” Starmer said.
“But it is for Ukraine to decide how to deploy it for those defensive purposes,” he added.
Storm Shadows are precision-guided cruise missiles with a firing range in excess of 250 kilometers (155 miles).
Ukraine has said it needs to strike military targets inside Russia to defend itself and repel Russian attacks, and it’s one of the main issues that will be discussed at the NATO summit.
