In a throwback tweet on X, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, called on the Nigerian police to ensure the safety and protection of protesters.
In the post which was tweeted on November 29, 2013, when he hasn’t assumed the presidency, Bola Tinubu called on the police to exercise restraint and avoid using force against protesters and reminded them that their own families’ futures are tied to the outcomes of these protests.
The tweet read, “Police, Do not attack protesters. Your children are involved. Your lives are involved. Children’s future lies here.”
Fast forward to today, as Nigeria faces an economic crisis under his presidency, many citizens are planning protests.
Nigerian youths are planning nationwide protests beginning from August 1-10, 2024. The protest, which is currently gaining traction in the North and other parts of the country, is aimed at drawing the attention of governments at all levels to the plight of the citizens.
However, the Nigeria Police Force has reportedly begun preparations to prevent the scheduled protest.
According to an internal memo obtained by a DAILY POST correspondent, the police have acknowledged that “certain groups are organizing for large-scale nationwide protests from July 1 to 10, 2024.”
Dated July 8 and distributed to Assistant Inspectors-General of Police across zones, the memo instructs officers to take proactive measures and ensure they have well-equipped personnel ready ahead of the anticipated demonstrations.
Many Nigerians on X are calling on Tinubu to stand by his earlier words, emphasizing the importance of protecting the right to peaceful protest during his regime as president.
