Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 Presidential Candidate for the Labour Party, is calling for increased investment in Nigerian youth.
Inspired by the stellar performance of Spanish teenage football sensation Lamine Yamal at Euro 2024, Obi, who served as governor from 2006 to 2014, believes that Nigeria can achieve similar success by nurturing its young talent.
During his tenure as governor, Obi demonstrated his commitment to youth development by sponsoring 18 pupils to Norway to help them achieve their dreams of becoming professional footballers.
Obi’s advocacy for greater youth investment stems from his belief that Nigeria’s future lies in its younger generation. He argues that with proper support and opportunities, Nigerian youth can excel on the global stage, much like Lamine Yamal.
Obi’s track record and ongoing dedication highlight the importance of providing resources and guidance to young talents across the country.
During his post on Yamal performance in the just concluded Euro 2024 final match, Obi amplified the need for investment in teenager using Yamal as example.
Reacting to his post an X user @akorede said his worry is that Obi speak like someone who hasn’t been in government before. Challenging Obi to show how many teenager like Yemel has he help in his state during his 8 years of government.
@official_UG90 countering the response said “Don’t say what you don’t know, he sponsored 18 YUSFON players to Norway and he is among the players”. Noting that they stayed for 1 week without their parents paying 1kobo.
However, Obi initiative of sponsoring 18 YUSFON (Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria) players to Norway during his tenure as the Governor of Anambra State was part of his efforts to promote sports and youth development in the state.
