During his first visit to Iowa since announcing his 2024 presidential bid, former President Donald Trump outlined his vision for American schools if he wins: universal school choice, changes to the school curriculum, elected school principals, and the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education.
“This is what must be done to save our country from destruction,” Trump told the crowd in Davenport, Iowa, during a speech that focused on education among other campaign priorities. Republicans, including Trump’s expected rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have capitalized on education-related culture wars to attract voters.
Trump addressed a range of issues before turning to education, where he vowed to cut federal funding for schools promoting “critical race theory,” “transgender insanity,” or “any other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content to our children.”
Labeling modern U.S. history teaching as “liberal indoctrination,” Trump praised Iowa leaders for establishing a school voucher program that will eventually be available to every student in the state, aligning with his executive order supporting federally funded private school choice.

He said, “I said the other day I will bring back parental rights into our school system, and the place went crazy,” he said. Monday’s crowd, too, reacted with cheers, whistles and claps when he declared, “As president, I’ll fight to expand that right to every single state in America.”
