Britain’s FCDO Warns Citizens Against Travelling to Nigeria Amid Protest

Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued a travel advisory on Friday, cautioning citizens against traveling to several parts of Nigeria, including the border with Niger Republic, due to planned nationwide protests.

The FCDO, which advises British nationals on travel risks to help them make informed decisions, published the advisory on the UK government’s website.

The alert is based on the upcoming #EndBadGovt nationwide protest set to begin in Nigeria on August 1, 2024, which is already gaining momentum.

The FCDO’s latest update, issued on July 26, states, “New information indicates that widespread public demonstrations are a possibility across Nigeria.” British citizens are advised to thoroughly research their destinations before traveling.

The FCDO identified certain states in five of Nigeria’s six regions where the nationwide protests may pose risks, advising citizens to avoid these areas. The advisory warns that “your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.”

The advisory specifically warns against all but essential travel to “Abia state, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states, Anambra state, and Imo state.”

Additionally, the FCDO advises against traveling to the Nigeria-Niger Republic land border, which “has been closed by Nigerian authorities in response to the political situation in Niger.”

Citizens planning to travel by land across the Nigeria-Niger border are urged to check with local authorities in both countries for the latest information before traveling.
