PROTEST: NCC, NSA Slow Internet to Suppress Protests and Stifle Global Support – Report

A report from Telecom Operators states that the NCC and NSA are deliberately slowing down internet speeds nationwide to hinder the flow of information from protesters to other Nigerians and the outside world.

Telecom Operators informed Peoples Gazette that this move aims to suppress the coverage and visibility of the ongoing demonstrations.

Peoples Gazette on their X handle stated that an administration official confirmed this interference, stating that isolating the protesters would cut off their crucial global support, making it easier for the government to manage the situation.

By limiting communication, the government seeks to weaken the international attention and pressure on the crisis.

Rights activist Emeka Mbah has urged Bola Tinubu to allow Nigerians to express their frustrations about the severe hunger and corruption plaguing the country.

Mbah argues that restricting both the protesters’ means of livelihood and their ability to voice their concerns represents an overreach by the government.

Mbah emphasized that silencing the public during a crisis not only exacerbates their suffering but also undermines democratic principles. He believes that the government’s actions are an unjustifiable extension of its control over the population.

The interference with internet services is seen as a strategic move to manage and suppress dissent, raising serious concerns about freedom of expression and the right to protest in Nigeria.
