Inibehe Effiong, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and activist, has criticized the pervasive use of tribalism in Nigerian politics, emphasizing its detrimental impact on governance.
According to Effiong, while tribalism may be an effective tool for political maneuvering and gaining power, it falls short in addressing Nigeria’s severe economic challenges.
He argues that tribalism cannot alleviate inflation, reduce hunger, or tackle the nation’s security issues.
In his words on his official X account, ” You can use tribalism to grab power and run with it, but you cannot use tribalism to govern well.
“Tribalism will not change the terrible economic situation of Nigeria, it’ll not reduce inflation, it’ll not end hunger and insecurity,” he added.
Effiong’s criticism comes in the wake of ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. These demonstrations have highlighted the deep frustration among Nigerians regarding the state of their country’s leadership and the persistent socio economic problems.
The #EndBadGovernance movement, which has gained momentum over the past few weeks calls for an end to practices that perpetuate corruption and mismanagement.
As the protests continue, Effiong’s critique serves as a reminder of the broader implications of tribalism on Nigeria’s governance. The call for an end to such practices aligns with the broader goals of the #EndBadGovernance movement, which seeks to foster a more inclusive and effective political system.
