Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed expressed his disappointment with Bola Tinubu’s recent nationwide broadcast, stating that no consultation was made with state governors beforehand.
He mentioned that Tinubu’s speech did not reflect the reality on the ground, highlighting a significant disconnect between the government and the people.
Governor Mohammed made these remarks while addressing journalists at the end of an emergency security council meeting held at the Government House in Bauchi on Monday.
DAILY POST reports that the state government imposed a 24-hour curfew in Katagum LGA on Monday following an escalation of the crisis in Azare, the headquarters of Katagum.
During the unrest, hoodlums exploited the protests to vandalize the Government House Annex, the home of a former deputy governor, break into shops, and loot properties.
When asked about Tinubu’s address, Governor Mohammed said, “I’m not a spokesperson for the Presidency, but I certainly know Tinubu’s speech was very empty.”
“It has rather escalated the whole situation because he would have listened to the governors who are his first line of charge, first line of commanders at the sub-national level so that we can give him what is going on because we also listen to our local government chairmen.
“All the President’s commanders, the Police commissioners, Brigade commanders, we are working together with all of them.
“However, they went and spoke in a manner that has not shown empathy or sympathy to the youth.”
Addressing the destruction of government properties in Katagum LGA, Governor Mohammed stated that the state government convened an extended emergency security council meeting, which included stakeholders such as security agencies, traditional institutions, and religious groups, to address the situation.
He assured the people of the state that his administration would not allow the ongoing nationwide protest against bad governance, tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, to escalate further.
The governor urged citizens to remain law-abiding and exercise restraint to ensure sustainable peace and stability in the state.
He emphasized that the peaceful protests clearly demonstrate that the government at all levels has failed in fulfilling its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
