JUST IN: There’s No Smuggling Without Nigeria Customs Involvement – Fisayo Soyombo

Fisayo Soyombo, a prominent investigative journalist, has voiced his skepticism about the Nigeria Customs’ upcoming “blockbuster movie,” which dramatizes the agency’s efforts to combat smuggling.

Soyombo expressed his concern in a recent post on X, highlighting a critical line from the film: “One of our undercover agents has finally and successfully penetrated the gang of Gbemini,” a notorious smuggler. “It fails to address a significant issue within the agency itself,” he added.

According to Soyombo, the real challenge for Customs’ undercover agents is penetrating their ranks, given the widespread issues of corruption and complicity within the organization.

He further said that smuggling operations cannot thrive without some level of involvement or negligence from Customs officials.

However, he further reiterates his long-standing belief that internal reform is crucial, emphasizing that addressing corruption within the agency should be a priority before focusing on external threats.

Fisayo comments underscore a broader concern about the authenticity and effectiveness of the Nigeria Customs in addressing its own internal problems.

His critique suggests that while the upcoming film may offer an entertaining narrative, it misses the opportunity to spotlight and address the fundamental issues plaguing the agency.
