Three teenage girls have tragically drowned in a pond located in the Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident, which occurred recently, has been confirmed by local authorities and members of the NSCDC.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, with the victims identified as Fatima Sule, 12, Nasiya Sale, 12, and Huwaila Sa’adu, 13, all from Tulla village.
According to a statement released by ASC Badarudeen Tijjani, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the girls were at the pond around 11:00 a.m. to cut grasses for their livestock when the accident happened. The NSCDC received a distress call from the Tulla community at approximately 11:10 a.m.
Be said personnel of the NSCDC along with divisional disaster management officers and local community members, conducted a search and rescue operation. After about 30 minutes, they recovered the bodies of the three girls from the pond.
“The bodies were immediately taken to the nearest health center, where they were confirmed dead. Investigation revealed that the girls had been cutting grasses at the site where they drowned.” he added.
However, remains of the girls were returned to their families and buried according to Islamic rites. The incident has deeply affected the local community as they mourn the loss of the young lives.
