Controversial Bill: I’d Better Spend 20 Years in Prison Than Sing New National Anthem – Aisha Yesufu

Human Right Activist, Aisha Yesufu says she will choose to spend 20 years in prison than sing the new national anthem, which she described as Bola Tinubu’s anthem.

Yesufu ‘s outburst is coming after the House of Representatives introduced the Counter Subversion Bill 2024, proposing severe penalties for Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem.

Under this bill, individuals convicted of such an offense could face a fine of N5 million, a 10-year prison sentence, or both.

The same penalties apply to anyone found guilty of destroying a national symbol or a place of worship.

However reacting to this new development, Yesufu took to her official X handle to state that she would rather serve a prison term than recite the anthem.

She posted on X: “Will choose 20 years in prison rather than sing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly.”
