Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called on Nigerian students to actively participate in the upcoming second leg of the #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled to take place in October across the country.
Dubbed ‘FearlessInOctober,’ the protest aims to address issues of governance in Nigeria.
Sowore made this appeal by drawing a comparison between Nigerian students and their Bangladeshi counterparts, who played a significant role in a massive revolt that ultimately led to the resignation of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister.
Sharing images to emphasize his point, Sowore contrasted the political activism of Bangladeshi students with what he described as a lack of involvement by Nigerian students.
The activist criticized Nigerian students, particularly those from the University of Ibadan, for attending a religious event on August 16, 2024, instead of participating in the nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, which concluded a few days ago after 10 days of demonstrations.
Sowore stated, “A Tale of Two Religious Countries – BANGLADESH and NIGERIA! The first photo shows Bangladeshi students embarking on a massive revolt against their leaders, which led the Prime Minister to resign and flee the country.
“The second photo is of students of the University of Ibadan in Nigeria during an “UPPER ROOM” religious event on August 16th, 2024.
“The Nigerian students shunned the nationwide #EndbadgovernanceInNigeria, while Bangladeshi students led their own version of #EndbadGovernance revolt.
“Nigerian students still got a chance to fully partake in #FearlessInOctober,” he added.
The protesters had demanded the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy regime and the release of Nnamdi Kanu, among other issues.
