I Have Gone Round Edo State Five Times, One School Looked Like a War Zone — Akpata Says Lack of Leadership is Responsible for Problems

Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Edo State, has attributed the state’s challenges to a “lack of leadership.”

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Akpata criticized the current administration led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as “wicked and irresponsible.”

Akpata, who is contesting in the September 21 off-cycle election, highlighted the successes in other states like Abia and Anambra as examples of effective leadership.

He expressed concern over the deteriorating infrastructure in Edo, pointing to the poor condition of Uhiele Grammar School in Esan Local Government Area, which he described as resembling a “war zone.”

Akpata stated, “Everything rises and falls on leadership, and it is the absence of leadership that has put us where we are.

“I have gone round Edo state five times now, and it is the same story across the state. I went to a school, Uhiele Grammar School in Esan local government, founded in 1970; it looks like a war zone.”

Akpata also addressed the widespread mistrust among the electorates, acknowledging that the people have lost faith in politicians due to past negative experiences.

“My first challenge as a new politician is confronting people who don’t believe anymore. The trust deficit is so wide,” he added.

He pledged to focus on four key areas—electricity, agriculture, security, and education and health—if elected, emphasizing their importance in driving development and improving the lives of the people of Edo.
