Guber Poll: APC, Edo Govt Accuse Each Other of Planning to Rig Election

With just 25 days remaining until the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, tensions between the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council and the state government have escalated, with both sides accusing each other of plotting to rig the election.

The APC governorship campaign council has claimed that the state government is planning to use the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) to manipulate the election results.

In contrast, the state government has accused the APC of intending to exploit “Federal might” to secure victory in the gubernatorial race.

Prince Kassim Afegbua, Director of Media for the Edo APC campaign council, issued a statement titled “Governor Obaseki plotting to rig Edo election.” In it, he alleged that the state government has begun producing police and military uniforms for members of the state security network to wear on election day.

According to Afegbua, this tactic is meant to disguise ESSN members as legitimate law enforcement officers, enabling them to carry out electoral fraud on behalf of the government.

He alleged, “We, of the Edo State APC Campaign Council, are hereby alerting the public, Edo electorates, and all others concerned, of the clandestine and surreptitious moves by the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, to rig the forthcoming Edo Gubernatorial election using his illegal Edo Security Network as a gambit.

“We have been inundated with calls from well-meaning Edo electorates of his game plan to use threat, intimidation and harassment to disenfranchise Edo electorates from exercising their right at the elections.
