Waheed Ayilara, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, has passed away.
According to a report by The Nation, Ayilara died early Thursday morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja.
Family sources revealed that he had undergone prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday but passed away just hours after the procedure.
“We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead,” the family was quoted as saying.
A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State, speaking anonymously due to a lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly, confirmed the death of the Commissioner of Police.

PUNCH Online attempted to independently verify the information with the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, but was unable to reach him on Thursday morning as his phone calls went unanswered.
In November 2023, Ayilara, then a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), was appointed as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos, succeeding AIG Idowu Owohunwa.
Previously serving as the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ayilara was reassigned by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command in February 2024.
