Iran police force has dismissed the commander of a town in the northern province of Gilan after a detainee died in custody.
The Iranian police said in a statement carried by the state-run Irna news agency, stated that the commander was dismissed “due to insufficient control over the conduct and behavior of personnel.”
The detainee in question was Mohammad Mir Mousavi, 36, who was arrested on July 22 after being involved in a brawl in the town of Lahijan in Gilan.
“Due to the complexity of the case, the final conclusion on the cause of death of Mohammad Mir Mousavi will depend on the final coroner’s report,” police said, adding that the station commander and several officers involved in the incident had been suspended.
On August 28, the Norway-based Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw said that Mir Mousavi had “been killed under torture in the detention center.” The next day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered an investigation into the case.
