Former Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, has criticised those attacking him for supporting Chief Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan, describing them as ignorant.
In a statement released on Monday, Okupe, referred to his critics as “political urchins” who lack the knowledge and experience to understand the complexities of Nigeria.
Okupe emphasised that the country’s future is more important than any individual or political party, urging Nigerians to unite for the nation’s progress.
Okupe stated, “We must, with all sense of patriotism, support whoever God has chosen by his supreme providence to lead.
“After elections, we must shield our swords, criticise government constructively and patiently wait till the next election. That is the culture of true and enduring democracy.”
He called for constructive criticism and patience, advocating for a democratic culture where elections are followed by support for whoever is chosen to lead.
He expressed regret that many young Nigerians disrespect elders, noting that they know little about the country’s history.
Okupe, who resigned from the Labour Party after the presidential election, also highlighted the risks he took to support Peter Obi, despite the potential personal benefits of siding with other political forces.
Okupe stated that his support for Obi was unconditional, with no expectation of personal gain, and he had agreed not to serve in Obi’s government if he won.
He concluded by expressing his willingness to serve as an elder statesman and private adviser to Tinubu, emphasising his dedication to Nigeria’s greater good.
