Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s national football team, the Falconets, defeated Venezuela 4-0 on Saturday in their Group D match at the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
The match took place at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia.
Goals from Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Flourish Sabastine, and substitute Joy Igbokwe secured the Nigerian girls’ spot in the Round of 16.
Bello opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 16th minute, while Okwuchukwu added a second goal in the 28th minute with a header from a corner. Okwuchukwu, who also scored in their 1-3 loss to Germany, struck again in added time of the first half, assisted by a pull-out from Sabastine.
Substitute Joy Igbokwe sealed the victory with a fourth goal four minutes into added time, confirming the Falconets’ place in the Round of 16.
With six points and a goal difference of +3 in Group D, the Falconets will face their next challenge in the Round of 16 on Thursday in Bogota, Colombia. The Nigerian team previously defeated South Korea 1-0 in their opening match and lost 1-3 to Germany in their second.
Nigeria, along with Cameroon, advances to the Round of 16, keeping Africa’s hopes alive in the tournament.
