Rivers Election: Arewa Youths Condemn Poll Conduct, Urge FG to Withhold Funds Allocated to Local Governments

The Arewa Youth for Peaceful Coexistence has urged the Federal Government to withhold funds allocated to local government areas in Rivers State.

The call follows what the group describes as blatant violations and irregularities observed during last Saturday’s local government elections in Rivers State.

At a press conference in Abuja, the National Coordinator of Arewa Youth for Peaceful Coexistence, Haruna Bature, and the Chairman of the Abuja Chapter, Comrade Ogah Mark Okpanachi, urged the Federal Government to enforce the Supreme Court ruling on local government financial autonomy.

The Arewa Youth for Peaceful Coexistence expressed strong support for a democratic process founded on law and transparency, calling on all stakeholders to advocate for accountability and integrity in the electoral system.

The group also noted that a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had blocked the release of the voters’ register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

They further emphasized that this ruling underscored Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s disregard for legal procedures. The group’s statement highlighted that his administration’s efforts to hastily inaugurate elected chairmen cannot conceal the fact that the law is already holding them accountable.
