A tragic accident claimed the life of 35-year-old Patience Ashenenye when a police officer reportedly crashed into the commercial motorcycle she was riding with her three-month-old son.
The accident occurred behind Ta’al Conference Hotel near the School of Health, leaving Ashenenye and the motorcycle rider, Tasiu Mohammed, injured, while her infant son sustained a broken leg.
Ashenenye passed away shortly after being taken to the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital.
Two days later, her family reported that two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) visited them, offering N100,000 to cover her burial expenses.
The family declined the offer, stating they were only interested in seeking justice for her untimely death.
Speaking with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Ashenenye’s brother, George Akube, alleged that the officer responsible had been speeding in a government-owned Hilux vehicle.
“The policeman survived, but my sister did not. Her son is now in the hospital with a broken leg,” Akube said.
Nasarawa State Police Command spokesman, Ramhan Nansel, announced that an investigation has been launched, though the officer involved is currently hospitalized due to shock.
In his statement, Nansel extended condolences to the bereaved family and explained that the N100,000 offered was intended to help with immediate medical expenses.
The Command has since committed to covering all medical costs for those injured in the accident.
Police Commissioner Umar Shehu Nadada also expressed sympathy to the Ashenenye family, emphasizing the Command’s dedication to ensuring justice.
When asked if the officer would face prosecution, Nansel stated that the investigation is still underway and did not confirm any further actions at this stage.
