Peter Obi Donates ₦20 Million to Mary Agro Farm, Calls for Govt Investment in Food Production

Peter Obi has reiterated the urgent need for increased investment in food production to address Nigeria’s escalating food crisis.

He made this call after donating ₦20 million to Mary Agro Farms in Omughu, Obeleagu-Umana, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Obi’s donation came during a visit to the farm’s permanent site following his participation in the Peaceland University conference in Enugu.

Reflecting on the transformation of Mary Agro Farms, he praised the farm’s remarkable growth since his initial visit to their pilot scheme in Udi over two years ago.

He highlighted the farm’s significant expansion and adoption of innovative practices as a model for tackling food insecurity in Nigeria.

“The significant expansion of their agricultural activities underscores their hard work, resilience, and the potential of innovative farming to drive food security in our nation,” he said.

Obi expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s food crisis, citing reports from global organizations such as the United Nations and Save the Children International.

According to the reports, 33 million Nigerians could face severe hunger by 2025, with 5.4 million children at risk of acute malnutrition.

He urged governments at all levels to take immediate steps to invest in food production, warning of the devastating consequences of inaction.  

Commending the staff and management of Mary Agro Farms, he applauded their dedication to agricultural productivity and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their efforts.

He emphasized that with the right investments and policies, Nigeria can overcome its food challenges. “A new, well-fed Nigeria remains possible,” Obi stated.
