The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly opposed any attempt to position Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of Lagos. The party warned that citizens would resist such plans.
This reaction follows endorsements from various groups promoting Seyi Tinubu as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2027 elections.
One such endorsement came from the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, which, during a meeting in Owerri, Imo State, on Tuesday, suggested Seyi Tinubu could also consider running for governor in Osun or Imo states, reportedly linked to his family origins.
Similarly, another group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, described him as a visionary leader with exceptional intellect, empathy, and strategic abilities, urging him to vie for the governorship. However, these endorsements have sparked criticism among stakeholders.
Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode dismissed the idea, asserting, “Lagos will not serve him.” He criticized the notion of turning the governorship into an inheritance, questioning the appropriateness of passing such a role from father to son.
“Governorship is not a gift,” he stated, stressing that if the Tinubu camp were to resort to tactics similar to those used in Ondo and Edo states in the past, it would be met with resistance.

He emphasized that a significant number of Lagosians did not vote for Tinubu in the last presidential election, signaling their likely resistance to supporting his son as governor.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths criticized the notion of a member of the Tinubu family assuming the governorship, asserting that non-indigenes should not be permitted to govern Lagos State.
However, Seye Oladejo, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, dismissed discussions about the 2027 elections as premature.
“It is too early to be discussing the 2027 elections,” he said, urging people to focus on supporting current government.
He said, “We should rally behind the governor and the president now to advance development.”
Earlier, Joe Igbokwe, a prominent chieftain of the APC, shared his perspective on the issue via his Facebook page.
“Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governor? This is a needless distraction. The real target is to bring down President Bola Tinubu. Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs,” he wrote.
