A tragic case of suspected domestic violence has rocked the Onicha Ngwa community in the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, where a man reportedly set his wife and three children on fire during the early hours of Saturday, following claims of infidelity.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Udochi Amala, allegedly poured petrol on himself, his wife, Amarachi, and their three children before igniting the fire. The horrific incident happened between 1 am and 2 am, according to local sources.

The family, originally from Amapu Ihe in Osisioma LGA, was caught in the blaze. One of the children, a daughter, was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe burns. The wife and two other children were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Unconfirmed reports indicate they later passed away on Monday from the injuries sustained.
Udochi, who survived the inferno, reportedly tried to flee the area but was captured by residents and handed over to law enforcement.
Speaking to investigators, he confessed, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.” He further admitted that he had no evidence to back his suspicions of his wife’s infidelity.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed the occurrence. “Yes, the police are aware. Investigation is ongoing,” said Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka.
The Abia branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a blatant act of cruelty and a violation of human dignity. In a statement released on Tuesday, Chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and Secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji declared:
“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this horrific act. FIDA Abia calls for a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of the perpetrator. Justice must be served, and adequate support must be provided for all victims and survivors of domestic violence.”
FIDA further urged authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable women and children across communities and called on the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of abuse.
The tragic event has reignited public anger over the lack of effective response from government institutions when it comes to addressing gender-based violence. Under Tinubu’s administration, activists argue, Nigeria continues to witness rising cases of unchecked domestic abuse, while survivors struggle to access justice and support.
