You Wake Up, Breathe, Then Attack Peter Obi — Acapella Slams Bwala, Critics Over Obsession with Obi

Nigerian comedian Acapella has lashed out at critics of Peter Obi, particularly Daniel Bwala, special adviser to Tinubu on policy communication, accusing them of being obsessed with dragging the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate despite publicly claiming he is politically irrelevant.

Acapella’s reaction followed a post by Bwala, who questioned Obi’s role in the June 12 democratic struggle. In his X post, Bwala suggested that Obi was not involved in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, alleging instead that the former governor may have been overseas engaging in trading activities at the time.

“Please can someone confirm to me whether it is true that on June 12, 1993 and weeks after that @PeterObi Peter Gregory Obi was in Malaysia or somewhere in Asia doing buying and selling trading business? I searched the internet to see any of his involvement in the struggle for democracy, I couldn’t see any link ohh,” Bwala wrote.

Responding to the jab, Acapella took to his official X handle on June 12 and ridiculed the daily obsession of Obi’s detractors.

“once Una wake up everyday take Una first breathe, next thing fiam ‘Peter Obi’,” he posted.

The comedian questioned why someone allegedly “distant third” in the last election could still trigger constant online discourse, especially among opponents who continue to downplay Obi’s significance. “For someone y’all claimed came distant 3rd, and have Only 3 People In A Room. One would have thought he’ll be so irrelevant to you people,” Acapella added.

He didn’t stop there. Turning the spotlight back on Bwala, he subtly challenged the credibility of the critic’s own democratic credentials. “You no go like show us any link of yourself for the struggle of democracy?” he quipped.

The exchange has further deepened the ongoing political tension online between Obi supporters and opponents of the former Anambra governor. Many Obi backers have since rallied behind Acapella’s post, calling out what they perceive as a coordinated effort to discredit the only candidate who has remained consistently active in speaking up for ordinary Nigerians post-election.
